I am Senior Vice President and Chief Design Officer at Walmart. Our team creates experiences for customers online and in the store, and for employees in the retail environment and our corporate offices. We use design thinking and rapid prototyping to imagine, inspire and align cross-functional teams throughout the enterprise. We are at the forefront of Walmart's digital transformation.
Prior to Walmart, I was Chief Product Officer at Samsung NEXT, the global innovation arm of Samsung. I've also held executive leadership positions at some of the most amazing design firms in the world: I was Head of Digital at IDEO, Global Executive Creative Director at frog design, and Associate Partner at Pentagram.
In addition to these roles, throughout my career I've consulted in different sectors to identify new business opportunities. I collaborated with major healthcare companies Sanofi, Merck, J&J, and Pfizer to create behavior change products and services as an alternative to drug therapy. Our work was called the "gold standard of open innovation" by Obama's White House. With the Mozilla Foundation, I helped build a network of entrepreneurs to create low-cost ways to connect rural villages to the internet in India, South Africa, and Brazil. My team designed the Marc Cuban-backed healthy fast-food chain: Naked Pizza, which launched across the US, UK, and UAE. I've also advised Magic Leap, Malala Fund, and HopeLab on brand and product strategy.
In 2007, I founded the Designers Accord, the global coalition of designers, educators, and business leaders working together to create positive social and environmental impact. I led the Designers Accord for ten years, during which over half a million designers engaged in projects and programs to advance the conversation around the ethics, practices, and responsibilities of the design community. Our final international initiative was Creative Power Day.
I've been named one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business by Fast Company magazine, a Guru of the year by Fortune magazine, a Hero of the Environment by TIME magazine, a Master of Design by Fast Company, one of the World's Most Influential Designers by Businessweek, and a Tech Titan by The Irish Times.
I have spoken at Davos several times, keynoted at SXSW, European Trend Day, and PINC, and written for Fast Company, the World Economic Forum, the Huffington Post, and Core77. My favorite topics are connecting business and design, design culture, the bias against creativity, system thinking, environmental issues, and social impact.
I am currently a member of the Ford CX Advisory Board. Previously, I served on the World Economic Forum Global Futures Council on Innovation & Entrepreneurship, World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Design & Innovation, Kleiner Perkins Design Council, Sustainable Brands Advisory Board, Sanofi Customer Innovation Board. I am also a member of the Japan Society Innovators Network.
